Ken Kotz

Ken received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

Ken joined the microfabrication group in the Center for Engineering in Medicine in November of 2005. His research has focused on developing new technologies for separating subpopulations of white blood cells from whole blood.

In particular, he has been developing a new platform for the rapid isolation of human neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes from whole blood. This work promises to aid basic and clinical researchers in understanding the immune response to injury. In a related project, he is applying these same basic principles of cell separation to develop diagnostics for tuberculosis. Lastly, he is working on optical methods for further purification of captured cell populations.
